• Notes

  left England when he was 1 year old, when his parents emigrated to New Zealand. Came to South Africa in 1890 and was appointed a District Engineer in the Cape Government Railways. During this time he supervised the building of the railway line from Bloemfontein to Vereeniging. In 1895 he was appointed by the O.F.S. government to supervise the Public Works Dept. in Bloemfontein. He was later appointed Chief Engineer of Roads & Bridges for the Orange River Colony (O.F.S.).
