"Joseph's second son Arthur, a tall strong man who could run 30 miles with arifle an dammunition, had an adventurous spirit. He left the family to join the gold rush at Barberton, afterwards contracting for building part of the ransvall-Delagoa Bay railroad. He took up two pieces of government land in the Lowveld and used to take parties hunting in what is now the Kruger park. When the boer war broke out he was called up into the boer forces, eventually becoming a colonel and being present at the signing of the treaty of Vereeniging. During the 1914-18 he was in charge of atroop of coloured and Bushman scouts in southern South West Africa. After the war he went back to the Transvaal and became an accountant at Witbank - he had agood head for figures. Long befor ethis the family had lost touch with him but about 1957 Langford (jun0 was on luisvale station an dthe guard on the train heard him being called Mr Collett. He asked Langford if he was related to a Collett at Danielskruil as they lokked so alike; it was discovered that he was talking of Arthur who was then keeping the hotel there. Langford wrote to Arthur and about ayear later they had areunion at the Biggs's farm Grapevale.
