I am descended from Susan STRETCH, daughter of JAMES ST. LEGER STRETCH, 87th Regiment - a government land surveyor - and his wife, Catherine Devenish, daughter of John Devenish of Mears Court, Westmeath, Ireland. The couple are buried at Millbank, near Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape. My Susan STRETCH was the sister of well-known 38th Regiment soldier, native commissioner and diplomatic agent, Captain CHARLES LENNOX STRETCH, born Bristol, England in 1797, arrived in the Cape in November 1818 and died in Somerset East on 13 October 1882. Charles Lennox STRETCH married Ann HART, daughter of Robert HART of Bosberg (Somerset East) and was a brother-in-law of the Rev. R. Birt (L.M.S. Missionary) of Peelton.
I don't think Charles had any children. Apart from my Susan and her brother, Charles Lennox, James and Catherine ST. LEGER STRETCH also had a son Richard?) Aldworth STRETCH of the 60th Rifles (who married Maria, daughter of Philip Botha in 1826) and two other daughters, Ellen - wife of John Devenish (a cousin?) of Cape Rifles and Catherine STRETCH - wife of George BENNETT of Lichfield. Your bunch is likely to be descended from one of these children.
My Susan STRETCH was born around 1796 in Ireland and died in 1879 at Millbank, Fort Beaufort. She first married EDWARD PARR (in London?) around 1811/2 and having been widowed young, she came out to South Africa and married JOHN PRINGLE of Glenthorn. Her eldest daughter, Susan PARR (born 1813, London?) married JAMES ATTWELL of Battlesden, Alice near King Williamstown. Their daughter, SARAH-ANN(E) ATTWELL married my gr. gr. grandfather, ROBERT MEENT BYNG FIELDING, whose son, WINFRED DUMBLETON FIELDING married MARY-ANNE POUND SANSOM and had my father's mother, VICTORIA EDITH ELIZABETH FIELDING - who married my grandfather RONALD ALLEN FRASER O'REILLY.
