Notes |
- "Gentlemen of the Law" by George Randell:
After practising for some years on his own, Edward Montagu Harcourt Stone entered into partnership with Lorimer Benjamin DOLD, in 1902, and by the toss of a coin the name of the firm became Dold and Stone. The name has continued as such to the present day - both of the partners having had a son to succeed them. The sons were Kyle Edward Montagu Stone and Lorimer Melville Lorimer Dold. Edward Montagu Harcourt Stone died in 1944 and Melville Dold carried on the firm in partnership with Kyle Stone until he retired in 1960.
The Stones have always been St Andrew's College people. The first of the family to enter the college was Harry M - in 1886. According to the register he was one of the 10 new boys of that year. Tennis has been the great game of the Stone family. The court at 'Greystones' in Worcester Street was an institution: Kyle and his sisters, Emerald, Pearl and Ruby, were splendid players...EP championship and inter-provincial star was Kyle's wife, Ruth nee Hobson. Later Kyle was president of the Grahamstown Bowling Club.
His son, Christopher, played first team for St Andrews in 1858, and with his tall, powerful build was a football star. Wyd Dugmore writes: Captain of the 1955 side, Chris stone was not only one of the best line-out forwards for many years but succeeded also in moulding together a formidable and cohesive pack, by his general play and leadership.
In 1957-59 he was in the Rhodes XV; captain in 1959. In 1960 he went to Cape Town to be articled to George Findlay of Findlay and Tait, and played for the Villagers club. When home again he captained the Albany Club in 1961-62 and became a partner in his father's firm.
100 High Street, Grahamstown, has been the address of the firm for the past 70 years or so. Well known for his financial acumen and sound judgment (he was chairman of Grahamstown Building Society in 1980), Mr Kyle Stone is also an avid reader of English literature.
The DOLDS, except for Jack, the 1931 Springbok forward, are all Kingswood. There are none in the firm now - Melville died in 1978 at the age of 80 and had actually retired as long ago as 1960. But the name lives on.
