Notes |
- From "British Residents at the Cape 1795 - 1819" by Peter Philip Henry, a London merchant and shipowner who began trading with the Cape in 1806-07. His agent in Cape Town was Kenneth DUNCAN (arrived 30/11/1806). When he was killed in an accident on 25/2/1815, Henry's affairs were taken over by his brother-in-law, Ewan CHRISTIAN (arrived 9/1/1813) from Mauritius.
Henry married Dorothy CHRISTIAN, sister of Ewan and of Admiral Sir Hugh Christian and cousin of Fletcher CHRISTIAN of HMS Bounty.
Henry's brother was Captain Joseph NOURSE RN, Commodore of the Cape Station
1822-24. Henry himself arrived at the Cape on 16/6/1820 in HMS Vigo and remained.
12/1/1818 letter from HN to Lord SIDMOUTH; 'as a merchant having an establishment at the Cape of Good Hope, formed there on its conquest', he suggests that the Govt. should sponsor a settlement scheme at the Cape.
March 1822 founder member of Commercial Exchange. 6/12/1834 will signed Grahamstown by Henry NOURSE the elder, of Port Francis, 'but at present residing in the house of Charles MAYNARD of Grahamstown... and confined to his bed from sickness'. His children were Jane, Temple, Emma, Henry, Joseph, Gordon, Franny. Filed 9/1/1835 (MOOC 7/1/128-15) In 1821 Henry established a meat-curing business at Bathurst, supplying the Royal Navy; he also carried on a coastal shipping trade in his vessels, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary and Orange Grove. In 1827 he retired to Hope Farm, and in 1834 he died
at Grahamstown."
Henry Nourse met Henry Burchell when Burchell was the featured speaker at a meeting of the Royal Geographical Society in London; about 1815. Burchell is famous for his explorations of southern Africa and his depictions of the fauna of Africa. Henry Nourse was a wine merchant in London and imported wine from Kaapstad. So he had established interests there. The two Henrys became friends and lobbied Parliament to establish an English settlement in the Cape. In 1819 Parliament passed the bill and granted 50,000 pounds toward the migration of Englishmen to the Cape. (No ref.)
(So we have Henry to thank for getting the 1820 Settler scheme moving.)
