Notes |
- A Tribute presented by Michael Moore
Aubrey attended Kingswood College up to Std 3. He then moved to Queens College where he excelled as a sportsman and more specifically in the boxing ring. His attachment to home , however, saw him one holiday cycle home from Queenstown to Maclear, some 250 km.
After leaving school he joined the Pretoria regiment and saw active service with the Sixth Division during the Italian Campaign. He rose to the rank of corporal and received many campaign decorations.
After the war, Aubry started farming on the faem Woodcliffe and soon established himself as a very successful farmer, highly respected by his fellow farmers. He developed a passion for flying and with his natural flair for mechanics designed and developed a glider in co-operation with a neighbour, Derek Pote (See Grandson of Millicent Pote nee Gush). He also developed a highly successful hydro-electric scheme.
He became active in politics and served as an inside agent and campaigner for the then United Party. Aubry made a major contributionto his district by serving on the Divisional Council in the 70's and 80's.
His dedication to the taskwas reflected in the superior infrastructure the district enjoyed during those years
In 1984, after establishing their 3 sons on their own farms which was no mean feat, Aubry and Althea moved to town where Aubry established a small but highly successful mechanical enterprise. His mechanical ability and the wonders he worked on the lathe astounded many an observer and he certainly made a great contribution to the district with this service.
Aubry was instrumental in establishing the MacGie Shellhole in the early 1960's. He held many positions in the Order, each carried out with his characteristic dedication and discipline. His contribution to
the"MacGie choir" where he always managed to raise the tune a note or two, will be sorely missed I am quite sure "Pack up your troubles " will never sound quite the same again.
Aubry was a devoutly religious and highly principiled man, his deeds often speaking louder than his words. The church building near his home in Maclear bears testimony of his dedication to his church and must stand a monument to his personal contribution.
Aubry faced personal tragedy early in his life with the passing of his first wife, Elaine after less than 2 years of marraige together.
After his marraige to Althea tragedy again struck with the death of their eldest child Neville and again later when their next son Graham died a victim of cancer at the age of 40. It is certain that only their
faith and strong character helped them cope with these tragedies.
Even to an outsider, it was obvious that Aubry and Althea enjoyed a close and special relationship. He was a very supportive father and took great delight in his nine grandchildren. His daughterd in law compensated for the daughter he never had.
Aubry was a widely read man, with a charming personality and a keen sense of humour. He was a man amongst men and a true son of Maclear.
