  Only one member of BAILIE's party, George Stokes originally from Odiham in Hampshire went back to the land after leaving Albany and finding work in town. He applied for permission to return to England in 1822 but when he reached Cape Town he found employment with Dr Edward Roberts and decided to remain in the Colony. George Stokes married a settler's daughter in Albany in 1827 and was a merchant in Grahamstown before becoming a successful stock farmer, first at Baviaans River and then at Sephton Manor near Fort Beaufort. Lower Albany Chronicle 19 Novemer 1827: George Stokes was married by the. Reverend John Davies to Jane, daughter of John Fell.
