1925 Sybil was born 11/8/1925.
1925 Sybil’s mother died 11/22/1925 – just 14 days later.
Clara & Archie’s son Bobbie had been killed in a car accident 2/9/1924
(one day before his 6th birthday).
Clara was unable to recover from her grief and suffered from depression. She was advised to have another child – In the hopes of reviving her spirits. She died shortly after Sybil was born, of an infection then common in childbirth (called puerperal fever).
1925 Ada Whiteley (Archie’s half sister) was sent for to care for Phyllis and baby Sybil until Archie remarried. Ada and her husband David came to South Africa from England.
1928 Archie married Kay 1/27/1928.
Phyllis was 13 ½, Sybil was 2, Peter would be born the next year. They lived in a home designed and built by Archie:
“Chiltern” at 152 Chelmsford Road, Durban, South Africa
- Sybil attended Maris Stella School, as had Phyllis.
1946 Sybil went on to attend Cape Town University and received her diploma in Speech and
Drama in 1946.
1947 She met John at University, and they married on 1/10/1947 (on John’s birthday). Sybil was 21, John 23.
- Sybil & John moved to Pretoria, where John had a position of Assistant Professional Officer at the Transvaal Museum.
-In Pretoria, Sybil took classes from Leontine Sagan, and was invited to join with her in a new venture: a Studio that would give classes and sponsor plays.
1950 Sons were born in 1950 and 1952.
1952
1963 The family moved to Madison in 1963. Richard was 13, Peter 11.
John left South Africa because it became increasingly difficult for him to work under the National Party (the money came from them), who did not believe in human evolution and put pressure on him to change his exhibits and theories.
1963 – 1967 Professor of Anthropology and Zoology
1967 – 1983 Professor of Zoology
1968 Sybil received an MA in Speech from the UW in 1968. Her thesis was “An experiment in the Japanese theatre form in relation to children’s theatre,” her advisor A.C. Scott.
1970 John suffered his first coronary.
1971 Sybil’s PhD was completed in 1971. The title of her dissertation was “The Speaking of Shakespeare.”
1973 In 1973, Sybil joined the faculty of the Theatre and Drama Department of UW as an Assistant Professor. She had been a TA starting in 1968, and a Lecturer in 1971.
1979 Sybil became an Associate Professor.
1980 In 1980, on the third day after a bypass operation, John had a ‘near death experience’ that profoundly influenced his outlook on life and led him to a deeper interest in the spiritual aspects of Man.
1982 Richard died 8/29/82.
1983 John retired 6 months after his 60th birthday in 1983.
1987 Peter died 9/8/87.
1988 Sybil was made a full Professor.
19__ As retirement drew near, Sybil undertook the training to become a docent at the Elvehjem Museum of Art. She served as Docent for 11 years.
1991 Sybil retired and was conferred emeritus status in 1991. She was recognized for 25 years of “meritorious service” – starting in1966 with her service as a graduate student.
2000 Sybil and John moved to an apartment in Attic Angel Place on April 18, 2000.
2001 John died October 12, 2001.
2002 On June 23, 2002, Sybil was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. This was preceded by three years of extensive study, in classes that met weekly.
2003 Sybil moved into the assisted living section of Attic Angel Place on September 5, 2003.
2014 Sybil moved to the Health Center in AAP on February 26, 2014.
2016 Death at 9:52 am on May 20, 2016.
