Notes |
- Professor J L B Smith of Rhodes University.
The famous Ichthyologist who identified a coelacanth, and founded the JLB
Smith Institute of Ichthyology in Grahamstown. The East London Museum has an
exhibit of the first coelacanth to be caught in the world. Until this specimen
was caught off the Chalumna River near East London in 1938, it had only been
known from fossil remains and was believed to have been extinct for some 80
million years.
