SOCIAL ECHOES 11 July 1914
DURBAN
The wedding took place at St. Thomas's Church, Musgrave Road, of Miss Mary Shepstone and Captain Gem, of the Royal Sussex Regiment. The bride is the daughter of the late Mr. W. E. Shepstone and Mrs. Shepstone, of Musgrave Road, and the grand-daughter of the late Sir Theophilus Shepstone. The bridegroom, who is a cousin of the bride, is a son of the late Captain Gem (Royal North Lancashire Regiment), and is on leave from his own regiment, now stationed in India but shortly expected to be moved to South Africa. The Rev. H. S. Chignell officiated, and the bride was given away by her uncle, Mr. H. C. Shepstone, C.M.G., of Maritzburg. Mr. J. J. L. Sisson (cousin of the bride and bridegroom) acted as best man, while the bride was attended by two little bridesmaids, her niece, Miss Vera Calder, and Miss Josephine Hooper. The bride was dressed in white Duchesse satin draped with old lace, and the bridesmaids in pale blue silk crepe ninon and small Dutch bonnets. A reception was held by Mrs. Shepstone at her house on Musgrave Road, where a large number of guests assembled, representative of old Durban families, and many valuable presents were displayed. Mr. Percy Binns proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, and Captain Gem replied. Captain and Mrs. Gem left shortly afterwards for Illovo Beach.
