After the death of their mother in 1824,
John who was then aged 17 was apprenticed to a Mr Ogilvie, gunsmith, a Mr Welsford, merchant and in 1830's was in Cradock.
Thomas initially went to William Thackwray to learn wagon building, though he soon after went to John Rafferty as an apprentice saddler.
William then aged 10 was 'to be kept at school' for three years at the expense of Mr Ben. Wright, saddler and at the age of 13 to be bound to him as an apprentice
Ellen, aged 8, went to Thackwray 'as one of his children
Richard , aged 6, was taken into the family of John Brown - died 22 Jan 1826 aged 7yrs,3mths : St Georges Anglican Church
Mary Anne was 3 and was adopted by the Robert Wilmot family.
George Campbell was 7 months and was taken in by Robert Hart

John Stubbs was murdered by Xhosas at Clay pits on 31 May 1823 - "1823 A party of Xhosa's had come to the Clay Pits with ivory. John Stubbs met them to barter, illegally. The troops at Clay Pits Post were ordered to seize the cattle and ivory which, wih two of John Stubbs sons, they too to Grahamstown. The Xhosa's had interpreted this as a trick, and murdered John Stubbs. He left a pregnant wife and 6 children. His wife died seven months after baby baby George's birth and the seven orphans were dispersed among settler families and although later granted the farm Gilead, none ever farmed it."
