Notes |
- Susan McNamee writes:
He was born in Grahamstown in 1854 into a family consisting of his father Joseph McNamee and mother Mary Ann. They were married in Ireland in 1850 and his regiment was sent out to South Africa shortly afterwards where he participated in the 8th Fronteir War and was awarded the Queen's Medal for service. His son James McNamee was killed at the age of 27 (born 1854)at the Battle of Qualabani. My great-grandmother was pregnant at the time with James Percival who was born in February 1881-died Port Elizabeth 1968. McNamee Township in New Brighton was named after him. He was a very humane and efficient superintendent of Bantu Affairs who was greatly loved by the community he served. He married into the McDougalls, hence our connection with the 1820 settlers. We are also connected to the McLeans who arrived independently from from 1820 but around the same time. They came from India where Captain McLean must have been serving in the British Army and Mary Barnsfield, born in Calcutta into a family where the mother and father born in India.
