"Sophie Usher Pike was adopted by John Trollip (1828-1892) and Martha Collett (1831-1891); this one intrigues me; do you know more? When Sophia's mother & father died (when she was a baby and just five respectively). William Horatio Pike, her brother, took over the responsibility of her education and upbringing and he placed her at Miss Sarah Slater's boarding school in Grahamstown. When William died in 1863, she was only 16 and she went to live with an aunt with 10 boys (Aunt Dell?) She was 'adopted' by John & Martha Trollip who lived at Dagga Boer Farm. The Trollips also adopted Louis Henry Trollip (son of Henry Samuel Meaker) who married Miss Gregorowsk."
