LISTER, Joseph Storr, I.S.O., J.P. ; Chief Conservator of Forests; b. 1st Oct., 1852; o.s. of late Joseph Storr Lister, Firlands, Rondebosch, C.C. Educ. Diocesan Coll., Rondebocsch ; m. 1885, Georgina, d. of late Thomas Bain, A.I.C.E., Irrigation and Geological Surveyor, C.C. Asst. Manager Tukva Tea and Cinchona Estate, Darjeeling, May, 1870 ; passed lower standard examination Hindus¨tani, and an examination in land surveying and levelling ; appointed to the Forest Dept., Punjaub, in charge of Chauga, Manga, Lahore, and Umballa plantations, 1871 ; transferred thence to Hazara, to assist Deputy Con¨servator in exploring and reporting on the hill forests of Khagan ; ordered on special duty to Kulu and Khagra in charge of Nurpur sub-division ; left India owing to ill-health 1874; appointed Snpt. of Plantations, Cape Div., 1st Jan., 1875 ; J.P. and Road Magistrate, Aug., 1875 ; in conjunction with other duties, custodian of ex-Chief Langalibalele and ex-King Cetewayo during their detention at Uitvlugt and Oude Molen; established plantations at Worcester, Beaufort West, Tokai, and Kluit-jes Kraal; Secretary to Sub-Committee for Wood and Vegetable Products, Indian and Colonial Exhibitions, 188(> (medal and certificate); promoted Conservator of Forests, Western Conservancy, 1881, and Eastern Con-servancy 1888 ; twice detached to report on certain plantations, Transvaal ; reported on extent and value of Crown Forests of Transkei 1893, and on administration of Transkeian forests 1898 ; organized Natal and Zulu-land Forest Dept. 1902; received thanks of Natal Govt. 1902, and Orange River Colony Forest Dept. 1903, receiv¨ing thanks of that Govt. 1903 ; Acting Chief Conservator of Forests for the Colony 1st Oct., 1905 ; appointment confirmed 1st July, 1903.
