- David developed his early career in the mining industry, including as Managing Director of subsidiary RUC Mining Contracting Co. He attended the London School of Economics.
He was appointed Chief Executive of Murray & Roberts in 1986, leading the Group through a long period of repositioning and significant growth. He became Chairman in 1993 and Chief Executive of principle shareholder Sankorp.
David is a respected business leader in South Africa and non-executive director of major domestic and global groups such as Sanlam Limited, Chairman of Unitrans Limited, a Director of BHP Billiton plc and of BHP Billiton Limited, Sappi Limited. He is Deputy Chairman of ABSA, South Africa's largest banking group, Co-Chairman of the Business Trust which facilitates socio-economic development in South Africa, and serves on many business and development trusts.
He is also President of the South Africa Foundation and South African Institute of Directors.
