Chapter 9, page 136:
In 1835 the Xhosa were already using firearms in significant numbersand by 1846 they had become a central feature of Xhosa warfare. Whereas the Zulu’s obstinate adherence to their conventional tactics severely limited the utility of those firearms which they did possess, the Xhosa, fighting as they did from among bushes and rocks, maximised the effect of old-fashioned weapons which would have been completely useless in the open. It was bullets rather than spears which brought down the wagon train at Burns Hill.
But well as they utilised the firearms available, these were still woefully deficient in quantity and quality. Despite occasional help from the politically motivated Boers such as Coenraad de Buys and Louis Tregardt the clandestine arms trade was essentially a Settler business. After 1835 small-time smugglers such a Mahoney and Brown gave way to more substantial suppliers. It was common knowledge in Grahamstown that a good percentage of its inhabitants from wealthy merchants like James Howse and Mark Norden to butchers like Frederick Lee were engaged in the trade. Many of them were land-grabbing Grahamstown Journal-lining men, or as Governor Napier so aptly observed, ‘the very persons most clamorous against the Kafir nation.’ The returns were lucrative. A gun costing 10 rix dollars (about 15 shillings) could fetch an ox worth fives times that much; 30 bullets might buy a cow.
