Notes |
- Uncle Willie as he was affectionately known. Born in Newport but raised
and educated in Barnstable, England. Emigrated to South Africa in the
1900's and settled in Johannesburg. On the outbreak of the Boer War, he
joined the British forces and saw service at the seige of Ladysmith. He
married Aunt " Hetty " in Queenstown. There he opened Dunns Bakery which
was the only Bakery I knew for years. He also had a Cafe in Cathcart
Road where everyone went for tea and cakes. The Bakery had a horse drawn
cart which delivered the fresh bread. The horse was a magnificent
Clydsdale. Into the late 1940's we can remember the horse and cart
delivering bread even to Q.C. Bisset Dining Hall.
