Notes |
- Eldest son of Charles Penny II. Married in 1871. Had nine sons, and one daughter who died in infancy. Owned the farm Queensbury at New England, Cape Province, inherited from the Dean family. Became a scout with the rank of captain in the Boer War on the British side under Lord Kitchener. After the war gained great respect from the Boers for his just settlement of their land claims. Became a hotel keeper in Barkley East. In 1912, sold his hotels, bought livestock, and with his sons moved to the Tati Concessions in Bechuanaland (Botswana) to homestead. The cattle died enroute resulting in financial disaster for the family. They moved back to the gold mines at Benoni, where he became a coal merchant. Died in Plumtree, Rhodesia of prostatic obstruction. He was red headed and blue eyed, strikingly handsome. He had a fiery tember, used strong language and was pugnacious.
Notation from Frank Penny: Charles owned the Grand Hotel in Barkley East where he became a legend! He once cursed the itinerant piano tuner for bad workmanship and the man died in the hotel that night! Charles immediately reformed and gave up his heavy pipe smoking and drinking. The family pet baboon was given a funeral, complete with coffin and procession through Barkley East, after it had hanged itself. A cattle ranching venture in Botswana resulted in financial ruin. He then became a deeply religious man.
NOTE BY CHERER PENNY:
"One day my wife (Esme) and I were visiting Queensbury and the adjacent farm Lauriston, and then resident owners pointed out to us a small enclosed cemetary situated under a tree on the crest of a nearby hillock. We walked over to see it, and found there the small grave and headstone of little Millicent, as well as a number of graves of other members of this extended family. My granny, Elizabeth (Dean), always mourned the loss of the only girl born to her and taken so early to be with the Lord."
