Notes |
- This individual signed the death notice for William Fuller in 1897, writing in brackets underneath his name that he was a nephew.
Charles was persuaded by his elder brother Robertson to join him in Kimberley where he soon got swept up with the idea of going North so he signed up for the BSAP and was appointed Trooper Bertram and sent to FortTuli which was the entry point, in Matabeleland, for the column to proceed to Mashonaland. There he was a dispatch rider between Fort Victoria and Fort Tuli where, in a history of the BSAP, he was described as an excellent horseman , particularly adept at fording rivers. He returned to farm in Cathcart , served as a Lieutenant in the Border Horse during the Anglo-Boer War, where he was awarded the Queens Medal and 4 bars having seen battle at Wittebergen and the Cape Colony and Transvaal. He married Grace whilst in the Eastern Cape, where Edmund was born. Later he had an unsuccessful time farming near Pokwani in, what was then, British Bechuanaland, where Mousie and Neville were born, and in 1913 returned to Rhodesia and managed a cattle ranch in Belingwe. Later he became manager of one of the Government’s first experimental farms in the Gwelo district, where Birdie was born. He then dabbled in farming and mining and moved to Salisbury in the 1930’s where he owned a small store. In 1935 he was made a freeman of the City of Salisbury and in 1937 was appointed usher in the High Court. In the same year he was a member of the Rhodesian Pioneer contingent to the Coronation in London of George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The family home at 73 Central Avenue became a great meeting place and Eve Cook, returning to Salisbury to work off her government loan to attend and later lecture at the University of Cape Town, was advised to make herself known to Grace Bertram as she was a well educated lady with eligible sons. After first meeting Edmund she transferred her affections to Neville! Meanwhile, as he grew older, Charles enjoyed the company of his old BSAP buddies and on several occasions had to be returned to 73 Central Avenue in a Police Black Maria, being considered an honourable duty by the policemen responsible as he was a Freeman of the City! 73 Central Avenue remained a focal point for family and friends from all over the Union and Rhodesia all under the watchful and controlling eye of Grace.
