Notes |
- This is from the book "The House of Cherer" by Robert Cherer Smith -
"Robert Smith had become very friendly with William Burnett Biddulph, an 1820 Settler, who had taken a wagon loaded with merchandise into the interior as long ago as 1826 to trade with the tribes, after the Colonial government had authorised licensed traders to cross the border and meet them in their own territory. Biddulph ventured far into the interior into the country of the Koranas and the Bechuanas, which led him eventually to settle in Colesberg, a small village which was founded in November, 1830.
Prior to this the place was known as Toverberg, which was visited by the Rev. Andrew Murray, who had been appointed to the congregation of Graaff Reinet.
Among his activities in Colesberg, Biddulph became the postmaster of the village. He became convinced that the area held out great possibilities and thus wrote to his friend in Burghersdorp and suggested that he move to this district and take up sheep farmin, which had become a profitable business.
Colesberg was also regarded as a place having a good future, as it had become the staging post for travellers from the Cape into the interior.
Acting upon this recommendation, Robert Smith moved to Colesberg with his wife and family, where he remained for the rest of his life."
Robert Smith and Eliza Wentworth named their fifth child Burnett Biddulph Smith.
