Notes |
- He was named Twentyman after his godfather who was a well-known silversmith in Cape Town. He went to Grammar School in Swellendam and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant. His wife, Engela de Beer, was the sister of Zacharias de Beer, The Moderator of the Dutch Reformed Church. The Moderator's grandson, Zac de Beer, was a prominent politician and a member of Oppenheimer's financial team.
William Twentyman was Inspector of Government Service in Paul Kruger's administration, and worked in the old Raadsaal. He fought on the side of the Boers in the Anglo-Boer War and after the War he went into private practice as a chartered accountant. On retiring from his accounting practice, he became manager of the Magaliesberg Co-op Tobacco Planters Association at Rustenburg. In 1887, he purchased a piece of ground which belonged to M. W. Pretorius, son of Andries Pretorius, and erected a house on the ground, which stands today at 214 Struben Street, Pretoria (Erf 62). The house to day is a museum and houses the Jansen collection of antiques.
