  "Extract from Isabella Margaret CAWOOD’s (Bella’s) diary in October 1866 guided by her good friend Uncle Hutton: I am living on a farm with my granny, Eleanor Sephton born Strawson, near a hamlet named Salem in the district of Albany….. I live with my granny because of my education, for she was educated in England ….. my mother lives near Grahamstown When Joseph Cawood died at the age of 31 on 9 Oct 1862 he left Eleanor CAWOOD (nee Sephton) with 3 young children. In order to support her family, Eleanor took in a boarder called Harry Burns (R.C. Burns) a younger man and subsequently undertook a mock marriage to placate gossip from neighbours. Harry Burns was a keeper of the Tollgate and they lived in the Tollhouse. Apparently he was a heavy drinker and had a foul temper and started paying attention to and making life difficult for Bella, so much so that she spent a lot of time with her grandmother, Eleanor Sephton. Bella’s uncle Ted (Edward) Sephton (six years older than Bella) was a boy when the Hottentot War broke and was saved by his Hottentot friend Johnnie.
