Hilton farm, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Notes:
HILTON HOUSE.

One of the most architecturally important buildings in close vicinity of Grahamstown is the Georgian, bow-fronted farmhouse Hilton. It was the "height of architectural fashion" at the time and was built by Richard Gush of Salem for Alexander George Cumming (no relation of the "Eccentric Scot", Gordon Roualeyn Cumming, as far as is known) in the 1830's.

Cumming who was born in India in 1812 came to the Cape as a young man and married Elizabeth Damant Atherstone, sister of William Guybon Atherstone and they lived in the stables on the farm during the construction of the house.

The church on the property, St Peter's, was consecrated in 1877 and is the property of the Anglican Diocese of Grahamstown.

Hilton was built in the midst of the Frontier Wars and Lewcock writes that the house is "also remarkable for its complete disdain of attack, no attempt whatsoever having been made to protect it...It looks forward optimistically to a life of security and grace on the frontier, a state of affairs that was not destined to be finally realized until after the war of 1851."
