He never married. Farmed all his life near Kleinemonde. He left an amount of money in his will with which the Lych gate at the Cuylerville Cemetery was erected. He was known by his second name, 'Warwick'. During 1942 when Mr Mitfn was busy with the book "Some Frontier Families" he wrote as follows:- "I was camping at the Kleinemond, Tharfield in 1942. There was an old Mr Whittal living alone on his farm about a mile distant. It was said that he had a storied somewhere and that whenever he had to pay for anything he would pay in gold sovereigns. He had a huge white beard that Santa Claus would have been proud of, did all his own cooking and lived very simply. He was very shy and wout appear when someone came to see him. The story of the buried gold must have got around and he must have thought, probably quite correctly, that everyone who came to see him was either trying to sell him something or was hoping toe the treasure was kept. I visited him a couple of times and we became quite friendly. I tried to get him to tell me interesting stories of long ago but did not succeed. He was 88 and I heard later that he had gone to live with a" After his death, the following article appeared in the newspaper: "The will of Mr Warwick Whittal, a farmer of the Bathurst district, who died on November 29, 1946, at the age of 94, was filed yesterday. After making proviives he bequeathed the rest of his estate to the Lord Mayor of London to be used for the relief of children who were orphaned by air raids on England during the war. A further bequest of three hundred pounds was made to the Diocesd to be invested and the interest to be used for the maintenance of the Church of the Province of South Africa at Cuylerville, where Mr Whittal was born." At the age of 90 he sold his farm and went to live with his niece, Louiserley, at the Coombs and this is where he died. Endowed with great physical strength throughout his long life he was known for his love of the open air and for his integrity of character. He was buried at Cuylerville with his parents
