    OBITUARY
    Fanny Atherstone Currie
    Fanny Atherstone Currie, last surviving child of George White and Bless (sic) Ann Atherstone and granddaughter of Major T. C. White, of Table Farm, died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Saturday, in her 97th year. Born in Grahamstown in March, 1864, she married Joseph Currie, who was - in 1886 - learning farming with her elder brother Lorraine ("Lorry") at "Aylesby" and who then took over the management of the "Vaalkrantz", for his father-in-law. Fanny presently inherited the farm, on the death of her father, and she spent her whole married life on Vaalkrantz. When her husband died in 1941, her eldest son, Herbert, continued farming operations with her until 1943 when Vaalkrantz was finally sold out of the family. She then returned to Grahamstown and, until advancing years intervened, lived in African Street. In her declining years she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Currie, first at "Ettrick", and thereafter at "The Castle", Salem. She is survived by three sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, in addition to nine nephews and nieces. Her life was a quiet one with no marked highlights, but "Aunt Fan" and "Uncle Joe" were both loved and respected by all who were privileged to know them closely.
    The funeral service was held in the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George at eleven this morning and deceased was thereafter interred beside her husband in the Old Cemetery.

    Notes:

    There was a farm on the road from Fort Beaufort to Balfour/Katberg, branching off this road just beyond the Tibury's Toll Hotel and Railway halt, there is a road leading to a farm and farmhouse called "Lorraine". This farm, a large citrus, cattle and lucerne undertaking, was owned and operated by George White & Sons when I was there in the 1950's. I met old George White, who was maybe 70 - 80 years old at the time. He died maybe in the late 1950's. This does not match with the date given on your photo though. I also met my George White's three sons, Sandy, Donald and Clive who must have been born in the 1910 - 1920's or so. The people I met may well have been his son i.e., my George, and 3 the grandsons. With those names, he or his ancestors must have been associated with the establishment of the farm originally.

    I don't know whether this helps you at all. I cannot verify your photo, all I have done is to narrate my knowledge of the names "George", "Lorraine" and "White", and apply it to my knowledge of a part of the 1820 settler area.

    OBITUARY
    Michael Lorraine Currie
    Michael Currie met with a tragic end at Barville Park, near Port Alfred, yesterday. He was supervising alterations to a dipping tank when a wall collapsed, engulfing him. When he was extricated, life was found to be extinct.
    Michael, who was 22 years of age, was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Currie of "The Castle", Salem, and was widely known and highly esteemed. He was educated at St. Andrew's Preparatory School and St. Andrew's College, where he was in Armstrong House. He gained his rugby colours and, during his last season was hookier for the team. He then went on to Cedara where he took a two year diploma course. After assisting his father for a time, he took a manager's post at Barville Park, where he had been for about six months.
    The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George was crowded with mourners this morning when the Dean, the Very Rev. J. H. Hodson, conducted the funeral service, which was followed by interment at the New Cemetery. A mass of floral tributes testified to the widespread regret and sympathy felt over the untimely end to a promising life.
    The Divisional Council of Albany, of which Mr. J. L. Currie is a member, suspended its monthly meeting in order that members and officials might attend the service.
    We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved parents.
