    Notes:

    From London, he emigrated with his father and went into business with him at Port Eliza¬beth on their arrival in the colony. In 1822 he submitted samples of bricks and tiles of their manufacture for government approval, but was unable to fulfil his contracts because of his father's illness. His repeated applications for a grant of land for a brickfield were refused. He left Port Elizabeth about 1825 and was employed by the printer George Greig in Cape Town in 1828.
