Joseph must have been very young when his father left the Salem area, he probably spent his early teen years in the Maclear district. It is not known where he received his schooling but his formal schooling ended when he passed standard 6. He enjoyed mathematics and would often do maths problems for his amusement. When a young teenager he developed rheumatic fever and became seriously ill, while recuperating from the disease he went one Sunday with his parents to church and during the sermon he turned to a relative sitting behind and inquired "Uncle Will when are we going to go hunting bobbejaans again", no doubt to his parents embarrassment.
He then spent some time with the transport riders transporting goods from Delgoa bay to the reef. He must have been a fine shot as he told of the occasion when he won a shooting competition much to the annoyance of the boers in the party, who felt that an "Englishman " could not be good enough to beat them. The prize at competitions of this nature was usually an ox.
After his attempts at transporting he returned to Maclear as a farmer, he was living here when he married. He then bought the farm Glennesbitt in the Barkly East district. He was often away in the Maclear district ( riding over the mountain on horse back) to attend to his interests there leaving his young wife and children alone. On one occasion Gladys fired a shot through the door at a would be intruder which frightened him off, but on the whole there were no incidents to disturb these settlers. Joe seems not to have had fear of animals at one time when he was well into his sixties he grabed a spitting cobra by the tail as it was disappearing under the houseand tossed it where it could be dispatched, asked whether he was not afraid of beeing bitten he replied that his wife would never have been satisfied to go to bed knowing there was a snake somewhere under the house.
Gladys inherited the farm Glen-coe from her father and the family moved there permanently, ultimatly Joe sold Glennesbitt and bought the farm Ben Macdoughy on the Leshoto border. Gladys and Joseph were married in the church at Lauriston and as this appears to have been the last marraige ceremony solmnised in this building the couple were given the church bible which is still in possession of the family.
As an older person Joe endeared himself to his grand children teaching them to shoot and to appreciate the great outdoors, also his abilities to fix things was a great asset in the childrens eyes. He owned one of the first motor cars to be imported to this area, when a friend asked what the fuel consumption of this vehicle was Joe answered that since he had found a piece of rubber pipe and disposed of it he expected that the fuel consumption would improve considerably. At this time his two sons owned motor cycles and presumably used the pipe to siphon petrol from the car!

Joseph married Gladys Lillian Susan Sephton on 5 Jan 1897 in Barkly East Church (Lauriston), Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Gladys (daughter of John William Sephton and Susan Halse Poultney) was born on 7 Sep 1876 in Glengyle farm, Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa; died on 9 Nov 1952 in 'Wartrail', Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa. 2. 5.  Gladys Lillian Susan Sephton was born on 7 Sep 1876 in Glengyle farm, Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa (daughter of John William Sephton and Susan Halse Poultney); died on 9 Nov 1952 in 'Wartrail', Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • 1820 Lineage: Yes

    Notes:

Contributed by her grandson Ralph Gush.

Gladys' certificate of Baptism is signed by Rev. Richard Giddy. Gladys grew up as an only child as her two brothers were many years older than she. Her parents must have been very easy going and obviously the area must have been safe and stable, Gladys was allowed to roam the veld as she pleased, often with a young Bushman woman named Topsy. She often picked berries and mushrooms to eat, and said in later years, that it was a miracle she was not poisoned.
She was a talented woman being a self taught painter and also playing the piano with more than ordinary skill. Unfortunatly these skills were never to be really developed. She was an extraordinary story teller and would enthrall her grand children with the most amazing stories. She spoke Seshoto fluently and was beloved by the black people, she would tell of the bushman maiden (Topsy) who somehow ended up in the employ of her parents when she, Gladys was a girl. This young bushman girl appeared to have been full of fun and was often Gladys' companion.
She was a gentle person an ideal mate to balance her husbands sometimes harsh nature, she believed in the goodness of the creator and once horrified the Methodist minister who was visiting and talking of Gods judgement which would be poured out, by saying" Mr Cunningham the God you are talking of is the Devil I fear"! She was an outdoor person and could often be found in her flower garden. In latter years Joe took responsibility for the vegetable garden.

    • Residence: Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa

    Notes:

William must have grown up in the Salem area and probably went to school at Mrs Matthews academy in Salem. Very little however is known about William's early years it may be presumed that he farmed somewhere in that area as his children were born there.
During the late 1860's William trekked North eventually settling on the farm Hentlands in the Barkly East district. According to his daughter Sophie who was about 8 years old at the time, when they arrived on the farm Hentlands the thermeda grass was in seed and looked almost like a land of wheat in ear. He did not however stay there long as he felt that his neighbours the Bothas were not very honest. He then trekked further eventually reaching the Transvaal, this move was however disasterous as he lost most of his livestock to disease. From here he moved into Natal where his few remaining livestock died and he decided to move back and eventually settled in Maclear, possably on the farm Woodcliffes. Most if not all of his children returned from Natal with him although some moved away when they grew up.
In latter years he was fond of pottering in his vegetable garden. One day he was busy in the garden and as so often happened in Maclear a mist drizzle came down and William became drenched, when he eventually came indoors instead of changing immediately he decided to rest awhile as a result of this he developed pneumonia and died.

    Notes:

TAKEN MOSTLY FROM DIARY OF A.W.SEPHTON

John William was only 11 years old when his father died, his mother having passed away earlier, he was brought up by his brother-in-law, Richard Giddy, who had married his eldest sister. His only formal education was probably when he visited his grandmother in Grahamstown.
At the age of 13 he went to Bloemfontein, on the recomendation of his brother- in- law, as interpreter and guide to 2 gentlemen from London, governor Donald Grant and his secretary Mr W.Stuart, who were taking over the Free State on behalf of the British government. A test of the boys ability showed that his English was fair his Dutch good and his command of the native languages excellent. As they fared North it soon became evident that the gentlemen from London were woefully ignorant of the lore of the veld and they relied entirely on the young lad to guide them. After a halt (perhaps overnight) they had a startling experiance, they were saddling up when a lion roared nearby, Grant and Sephton's horses were ready and they leaped into their saddles and galloped off Stewarts girth was not yet fast but he somehow leaped into the saddle without using a stirrup and galloped away with the girth dangling. Mr Stewart noticing the lad's lack of education felt sorry for him and as one of his duties set him at copying letters for him, which rusulted in an almost copperpate handwriting. His duties took him to the remotest parts of the State, attending court amongst the scattered tribes in the North West, to the young interpreter these wanderings were joyrides full of adventure where game was to be found in large numbers. When the British decided to end their Suzerainty one of John William's last tasks was to take the news of this and the decission of a meeting of burgers to Hoffman stating that he had been chosen to head the new republic. When Sephton found Hoffman and handed him the document Hoffman requested that Sephton read it and translate it for him as it was written in English.
We next find John William at the Mission Station with a good horse a gun and a little cash with which he bought a span of oxen. He rode to Thaba Bosigo and laid his case before Moshesh, explaining that he had oxen but no wagon, fortunately for him Moshesh had shortly before in a succesful raid captured several wagons from the bastard chief Tybos and he told Sephton to take his pick. After changing some parts he found himself the owner of a voortrekker type wagon with a full length tent and so he set out to trade. At this time there was a large population along the banks of the Orange river. In the mean time through the representations of Richard Giddy he acquired a farm near Cathcart from where he continued to trade and build up his livestock. In 1860 he gave up trading and after his marriage made an unsuccesful attempt at sheep farming. He then moved to Stormberg and in the summer of 1867 having bought the farm Glengyle he moved there, their first home being a cave. After a survey of the farm the site of the present homestead was considered most suitable and the first section of the house was built by a home born man named Fred Milton.
