- This Samuel Short is a bit of a conundrum.
1. He married Eliza Mills in 1849 in London, and they appear on the UK 1851 census in East Coker, Somerset. It appears that Samuel and Eliza left England soon after for South Africa but I (PaulTT) can find no record of their travel. They had four children, Lydia, Eliza, Henry and finally a son John born in Claremont, Cape Town in Nov 1861, and then she must have died soon after as she was buried on 18th December. Samuel's marriage cert to Sarah Adams states that he was a widower.
2. he marries Sarah Adams, and has twin children, a Samuel and Sarah Adams in October of that year, and then a son Louis. A daughter Susan W C W was born in Victoria West in 1867 , sons Charles and Theodore are born in 1869 and 1871, but the baptism indicates that the mother was a Susan. I think this was a mistake and should be Sarah. By 1878 he has lost his job and by 1881 he is bankrupt and Sarah seperates from Samuel. He dies in 1904 and Sarah in 1910.

from Sigi Howes on 28 Jan 2016 I received:
*From 1854 - 1857*
Teacher at the Holy Trinity Mission School in Harrington St, Cape Town (I have a photo of it). He quite probably started there in 1853, as the previous teacher left in the middle of the year, and that was more or less the time he and Eliza arrived in CT. Eliza Short was his Assistant at the school from 1854 until 1856. She probably taught the girls and he the boys.

*From 1858 - 1865*
In 1858 he joined the prestigeous Dutch school, 'Tot Nut van Het Algemeen' (I have a diagram of it) as teacher of English, Mathematics, Latin and Greek. He was popular with the children; competent but not 'dynamic'. When he left the Tot Nut in September 1865, the children presented him with a hand-bound Bible and a copy of Tennyson's poems.

*From 1865-1871*
From October 1865 he was the teacher at the Tulbagh Public School (today Tulbagh Hoërskool). He was not there in 1872, so he did leave, but where he went I don't know. In 1871 he would have been 51 years old. I have nothing on record about him in Victoria West. You could try the local school there to see if they have him amongst their teachers.
