Paul Tanner-Tremaine, the original compiler of this website and database, became interested in the 1820 Settlers in 1968 and began compiling genealogical family trees and historical information on as many of the 1820 Settlers that he could find.
He began his research whilst living in South Africa, and collected a lot of books and other information on the subject of the 1820 Settlers while there. Paul and his wife followed their sons to England (the land of his birth) in 2001, and having a computer background, he decided to build a website to share all the information that he had collected.
This website, www.1820settlers.com, was launched in December 2003 and has grown to be one of the recognised online resources for 1820 Settler information. Visitors from all over the world have submitted new information as well as corrections and updates to the data he had in the databases. Paul has also written a lot of the pages of the website, including those that show the maps of the settler locations, and pages to accommodate all the submitted baptism, marriage and death details in a searchable format. In 2019 he published on Amazon, a campanion book to the website in time for the 2020 Bicentennial. At that time he had managed to find and document approximately 2,950 of the 3,500 possible original settlers to South Africa, and their descendants.
After 57 years of research into the 1820 Settlers, including all the upkeep and maintenance of this website, in July/August 2025 he decided to 'call it quits' on the 1820 Settlers, and start concentrating on his own ancestry. He 'froze' the website and started considering how best to keep the website going, so that all the settler information did not go to the grave with him.
