Notes |
- He lived in Basil, Switerland, before joining the British German Legion around 1857. When the Legion disbanded, he accepted the post-war colonization offer and settled in Stutterheim, part of the Territories of British Kaffraria, South Africa.
He changed his surname to Schaefer shortly after naturalization on 27 October 1865 (Chad Schaefer has the original Letters of Naturalization signed by Robert Graham at King William's Town South Africa confirming the spelling of the original Schäfer surname).
