"In 1879 a young Englishman named James Butler spent a month at Grassridge recuperating from tuberculosis. He kept a diary which describes the farm and their family life. He wrote of 'the large, intelligent happy family' with whom he walked, rode, read, played chess and croquet. He and Letty were later married and lived in Cradock where James ran a bookshop and printing business, publishing the Midland News. Emma married his younger brother, Charles, who joined for a time but later started a newspaper in Vryburg, then moved to Cape Town before finally retiring to Cradock where he was mayor from 1837-1940."

James Butler........... this is what I have, which doesn't help you much, probably just confuses you more! (The reason for my concern in opening statement!!) Born 22 Jul 1854, Cradock married on 8 Oct 1879, Kimberley... to Sarah Lucy CAWOOD on 8 Oct 1879. He died 17 Jun 1923 and she died before him in 1903. Four children, one daughter, 3 sons. Next James Butler (with exact same dates of birth and death, no places though!) married a Miss Cawood (1856-1903), daughter of William and Sarah. Married on 8 Oct 1879, Cradock. His parents are Philip John BUTLER (1826-1890) and Mary WATTS (1823-1900). Same 4 children's names are given.... Third James BUTLER, with no given parents, (no day and month of birth or places, otherwise dates are all the same) married on 28 Mar 1882 Cradock to Ann Letitia COLLETT (1856-1951). 3 daughters one son. CONCLUSION! My source for this last entry is Duncan Ferguson of Cradock who has access to all the Cradock churches, but can be inaccurate. My other source is David Barlow's GEDCOM of the CAWOOD family! Well, the CAWOOD's are an absolutely enormous family. David has been at it for a while and I imagine he is quite thorough. I did once hear someone say that if you are related to a CAWOOD you are related to every other English speaking person in South Africa!!! (A bit like my HOBSON's and your TROLLIP's!!) Anyhow... the dates don't really mesh.... Unless of course James was into bigamy! Then again there could have been 2 James Butlers and over the years with various researchers not checking details, their dates have become the same! I had a similar problem with my James MURRAY's... However in 1820 Settler Women, by Stanley Shuttleworth I did find something of interest. Your James Butler who married Anne Collett was in fact an Englishman who in 1879, spent a month recuperation from tuberculosis on John Collett¹s farm ³Grassridge:. He kept a bookshop and printing shop. He is mentioned in his grandson¹s (Guy Butler) book ³Karoo Morning². So this James BUTLER was not actually born in Cradock, making their 2 James BUTLER's!! The other being a South African by birth... (I guess the date of birth in 1854 belongs to the South African BUTLER. The other date, we would need to confirm with a death certificate, which I don't have a copy of, Sorry!)

at the funeral..."there was our father; and his brother and five sisters - three of them with their Biggs husbands..."
