Notes |
- "of the Coombs" is recorded on his Memorial Inscription.
- "of the Coombs" is recorded on his Memorial Inscription.
Harold Whittal says that he knew Uncle Joe and Aunt Louise very well and also their family. Joe Dixon's father bought the Coombs Valley as well as the Claypits. Joe Dixon was especially fond of animals and it was quite usual to seeg to fetch the post at the Amos' house about two kilometers away accompanied by a dog, a cat and a pet monkey . He was on especially good terms with his oxen. A story is told about the time when he was a transport rider and had to le ox near Kimberley to recuperate. His intention was that it would join his span again on another trip. Three months later when he was at home in the Coombs he heard an ox bellowing. In surprise he said "That sounds like Blom, I k." Sure enough it was Blom and he had made his way home over hundreds of miles. The emblem of the Coombs Agricultural society as well as the Coombs Cricket Club is the head of a horse. This dates from way back to when Joe's Dad coule army to fight in the first world war because of his age. When Gen Louis Botha came to the Coombs William Dixon gave him his most prized posession, Fuse, a huge mottle-blue stallion to be used in the war. There is a photgraph of his horse hanging in a place of honour in the Coombs Community Hall, having become for the valley folk a symbol of generosity and patriotism.
