• Notes

John was schooled firstly by a Miss Saunders, governess, and subsequently at St Pius' Convent, Pietersburg, and then at a government school in Middelburg, Transvaal and finally Pretoria Boys' High School in 1926. When he left school he worked in a Dairy Business in Johannesburg for 10 months, (one of the Duthie's), whereafter he joined his father on the farm Egerton at Settlers, Transvaal. He signed up with the Army (Natal Mounted Rifles) in 1939 and was posted North. He was taken as a prisoner of war, having been captured at Tobruk, and on release in 1945 returned to the farm at Settlers. see WWII SADF involvement.pdf in documents section. In 1956 Egerton was sold and John and family moved to Egerton, Umhlali where they lived until 1964. They moved to the farm Morgenster, Eshowe in 1965 and sold it to retire in 1971 after which he and Margot went on a world cruise for a few months. His contact with farmers did not cease as he then sold John Deere tractors and farming implements until 1977. In the 30 odd years that they lived in Eshowe he and Margot were very active in bowling circles. She was the Zululand Sportsman of the year in 1968. They were both President of their respective sections at the Eshowe Bowling Club and Zululand. They both coached bowls in their spare time and were Zululand Umpires. John was also Greenkeeper, Secretary and Treasurer for the Club. For his 80th birthday and in memory of Margot, his children gave him a silver rose bowl trophy to present to the Club for an annual Mixed Tournament which he and family members sponsored each year.
