• Notes

John Engelbrecht - Dec 2011 - I have just completed a chapter in my book on U-Boat activities along the Wild Coast, and Ernest's exploits in combating them as a coastal patrol aircraft crew member. Ernest had an illustrious wartime career as a radio operator/dorsal gunner flying in Boston bombers in North Africa as well as serving with SAAF Coastal Command in SA. I obtained his wartime log book, and cross-referenced the sorties he flew with the day-by-day history of the lead-up to the Battle of El Alamein.
