• Notes

  Edgar Rorke Daniel grew up in the Bloemfontein district on the farm Hartebeeshoek. Part of the farm was later taken over by the army, and is now know as De Brug. The old family homestead has been declared a national monument. Edgar was educated at St. Andrews School in Bloemfontein where he excelled in sport. Although two years younger he played rugby for the school's first team alongside his elder brother, Victor. He joined the army as a clerk on 8 October 1942. He embarked from Durban on the ship "SS Arundel Castle" bound for Suez where he was posted to Special Signals Services, Radar Section. He was honourably discharged on 2 November 1945 and awarded the following medals: Italy Star, Defence Medal, The War Medal and Africa Service Medal. He settled in Pretoria where he became an official for a bank.
