• Notes

  He was a land surveyor and had worked for the British government for some time together with his elder brother, Richard, before he and his younger brother, John, formed a party of 1820 settlers. The party was located at Stoney Vale, on the road to Trompetter's Drift. He continued to work as a surveyor, and was responsible for the lay-out and development of the village and harbour at Port Francis (later Port Alfred). He was a Director of the Board of the Grahamstown, Bathurst and Kowie Shipping Company. [4]
