Burial Notes: Jessie is buried alongside her husband Edward.
General Notes: Jessie had a vicious temper, and it is recorded that, being jealous
of her younger sister, Alice's possessions, Jessie bit a lump out of Alice's knee.
Jessie was clever and did very weel at school, though she did not take fer
teacher's examination until she was 20. She taught at Springfontein, O.F.S.
Medical Notes: Jessie died peacefully in her sleep.
Noted events in her life were:
1. Birth Registration: 29 August 1877, Middelburg, Cape Colony, Southern
Africa. Jessie Phoebe was registered by both her parents.
2. Minister: Doornberg Farm, Brak River, Middelburg District, Cape
Colony, Southern Africa. The minister at the christening was the
Reverend Jones.
Jessie married Edward Newton SAUNDERS, son of Arthur SAUNDERS and
Martha TROLLOP, on 5 November 1901 in Steynsburg, Cape, South Africa. Edward
was born on 21 November 1876 in Cradock, Albany District, Cape Colony, Southern
Africa, christened on 15 April 1877 in Cradock, Albany District, Cape Colony,
Southern Africa, died on 29 June 1947 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, Union of South
Africa, at age 70, and was buried after 29 June 1947 in West Park Cemetery,
Montgomery Park, Johannesburg, Transvaal, Union Of South Africa. The cause of
his death was heart Attack.
Marriage Notes: Jessie's parents were averse to this cousinly romance, so it was
not until 5/11/1901 that Jessie was allowed to marry Edward, after four years of
courtship. When Jessie and Edward married they were both 24 years old. Jessie
often averred that, as their wedding was on Guy Fawkes' Day, there had been
fireworks ever since. This is belied by the fact that they were still happily
married when Edward died
