Notes |
- Information from "Comdt. Holden Bowker, by Ivan Mitford-Barberton, pg 273". "A full pedigree appears in Burke's Landed Gentry, 18th Edition Vol II, 1969, from which the following extracts were made: LINEAGE - Old Derbyshire charters show that members of this family were foresters in the High Peak in Plantagenet times. A Richard le Barbur, born in the reign of Henry III, is mentioned in a law suit in 1283, when his wife Margaret sued John Carbonel for her dower in Broctor, Peak Forest. In the reign of Henry IV (1399-1413), the Pleas of the Foreset of Peak (Woodland) show payments made by John and Richard Barbur for Booths in Edale, and Edward and William Barbur acquired Rowlee and Wisden in the upper Derwent valley. A Thomas Barbur was on eof the twelve surgeons named in a acontract made between Thomas Morestead and King Henry V, and they were with the King at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Also, in this battle, fought a Roger Barbur, an archer in the retinue of Lord Gray of Codnor. The ancient seat of the family, Whitmorely Booth, is located in the hamlet of Barber Booth. Hereabouts lived Roger Barber, forester for Edale and Ashop in the reign of Henry VIII. John Barber (will dated 1535) and his kinsman Thomas Barber (will proved 1575), both of Whitmorely, left male descendants, from one of whom is descended Roger Barber of Woodseat and Mams farms, Castleton.
