Notes |
- At the age of 4 he accompanied by his parents on their 'Great Trek' from Molteno in the Cape of Good Hope to the Eastern Transvaal border.
He was educated at the Rev. Wood's School in East London and then at Dale College, King William's Town and later, when the travelling to school became too difficult he transferred to Potchefstroom College which later became Potcherstroom Boys High.
In 1919 at the age of 17 he joined his father in learning farming. He stayed at 'Hereford' for 9 years while he learned farming, building and carpentry.
He moved to 'Peebles' situated 12 miles from the village of White River, Eastern Transvaal) in April 1928.
He planted plantations of firs and gum trees, farmed vegetables and sub-tropical and citrus fruit. He also grew tobacco. He renovated the old homestead and built a new house for his parents.
On his father's death he inherited 'Peebles' which he later sold in October 1973.
He was very active with the Farmer's Union. He became President of the Lowveld Farmers' Union. He promoted soil conservation and later became Chairman of the Lowveld Soil Conversation Committee. Also involved in nature conservation. Chairman of the Lowveld Wildlife Association for 10 years before he became Honorary President.
In 1948 he and Rene became Life Members of the Kruger National Park and he was made an Honorary Ranger in 1962.
On the 28th March 1947 he and his wife had the honour of meeting and entertaining the Royal family; their Royal Highnesses and the late King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose at the Subtropical Research Station at Nelspruit, Transvaal, South Africa.
He was honoured with a Life Presidency of the Lowveld Show Society and the Lowveld Farmers' Union but could not attend the function in 1976 because of ill health. He retired to White River in 1973 where he died in 1976 after a short illness.
