  Grew up on the farm Glen-coe in the Barkly East district. Completed his schooling at Queens College, Queenstown. After school worked for his Grandfather Joe Gush for nearly 2 years, then apprenticed himself to Scott Bros & Greaves in Queenstown where he Qualified as a motor mechanic in 1957. After qualifying moved to Port Elizabeth where he worked at Pioneer Ford. After marrying Avis he went back to farm for a short period but soon went back to P.E. as a mechanic. After Owen was born Terence and Avis moved to Humansdorp where they settled
