A popular and caring general practitioner in Bury St Edmunds, David Charles Tennant was born in South Africa and entered St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, in 1937. After graduation he was appointed house surgeon to Arthur Dickson Wright. He served as medical officer to a fighter squadron in France, Belgium, and Germany. After demobilisation he returned to work at St Mary's and then moved on to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, as an orthopaedic registrar. He then moved to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds as surgical registrar.
He finally entered general practice and worked in this field until he retired. He was one of the pioneers of the Suffolk Accident and Rescue Service, organised with the local doctors, fire service, and police force, and worked for many years with the Red Cross Society.
In retirement he returned to his roots and spent some time working at the Jane Furse Memorial Hospital in Lebowa, South Africa.
He leaves his wife, Georgina, his two surviving daughters, and his son, as well as nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
