Notes |
- Samuel Best Shaw was born during his parents first return visit to England.
Below is an excerpt from my book. I am related to Barnabas Shaw but not William Shaw. Although both were Methodist ministers they were not related to each other.

SAMUEL BEST SHAW (1828 – 1889)
Samuel Best Shaw was born during Barnabas and Jane’s first return to England (1827-29). He must have stayed behind during their second visit (1837-1843) as he was educated at Wodehouse School, Leeds (Lynn Macleod, The Diary of James Butler). He would have been nine when the family arrived back in England and 15 when they left. As a young man he emigrated from England to Australia where he worked as a police officer, married and had a daughter (Jane). When his wife died he moved to the Eastern Cape where he met Mary Anne Barnes. The couple were married in 1860 on Mary Anne’s family farm, Bowden, north of Grahamstown on the Cradock Road. ????
From the age of 23 to 47, Mary Anne gave birth to thirteen children at least four of which did not survive infancy: Barnabas 1861; Ann Best 1863; George Barnabas 1865; Frederick Samuel 1867; Caroline 1869; Mary 1870; Fanny Daphne 1872; Lucy 1874; Samuel Best 1877; Edward 1877 (twin); Hetty 1878; D’Urban 1882; Daisy 1885.
In 1863, Samuel became the proprietor of the Weslyean Academy at Salem. The latter was originally established by William Matthews in a wattle and daub building that doubled as Salem’s hospital and church. It had many famous pupils such as Sir Theopolis Shepston and the children of David Livingstone. In 1833, 30 boys and 4 girls were attending the academy (Barnes,48). Khama ???
Around Christmas in 1868, Anne and Samuel’s third child, George, became something of a celebrity in the Albany region. The family were staying with Samuel’s brother (Rev Barnabas Shaw Jnr) at Bushman’s River Mouth when George, aged three, went missing. A massive manhunt was launched involving “white and black, gentlemen and workmen”. He was found after five days lying under a tree. The herdboy who discovered him is reported to have said that he heard faint moans and that the boy wanted to know “Where’s my Ma?” It is believed that George had kept death at bay by eating berries and by gnawing on his shoe! The shoe in question was subsequently painted with a gilt preservative and is on display in the Grahamstown museum. The herdboy received two cows as a sign of gratitude from the Shaw family (Barnes, 47).
