- Thomas served in the South African Army during World War ll (1939-1945), and was taken prisoner of war at the fall of Tobruk. On returning to South Africa after the war, he was a Farmer and a Horsebreeder of "Culmstock", Middelburg, Cape. He was in charge of Southey Brothers' Racehorse stud, founded by his grandfather, Senator Charles William Southey. Thomas was killed when a paraffin refrigerator was inadvertently filled with petrol, and exploded when he ignited it.
