  According to De Souza he worked on the Kimberley diamond fields. According to Dora Ortlepp Poultney in her book Dawn to Dusk (Cassel & Co 1936) p13,para 2, Elizabeth Sephton (his maternal aunt) was present at his birth. He was born shortly after an assegai attack on his father. He was pitch black at birth and only regained his natural white colour weeks later. He lived to become famous in a war years later. "Tom was a restless individual - with a wanderlust that carried him far North into territories that had not seen a White man before. He never married, but was popular and much liked by all he met - white and black alike. A pioneer explorer, he was fluent in English, Dutch and Sesotho. Once he took mother 'deep into Basutoland, to Mpotxlo's village - to see cannibal caves.' These could only be reached via a narrow shelf across a krantz. At the village Tom was accosted by a big Black who demanded to know who he was. Mother did not say when it was that this took place, but she mentioned that Tom was little more than a boy at the time. Tom's reply apparently took the wind out of the Black man's sails. 'Me?' he answered, 'I am my father's son,' with which he escorted his young sister past the man." He never married, and had no children.
