Notes |
- Jessie was an adopted child whose mother came from the gentry in Scotland
and her father was a plumber. Her name was originally Mary Nichol. This
was an unacceptable situation therefore the mother who was not married
was made to give her baby up for adoption. There had been a ferry
disaster at the time and as Grandfather and Grandmother King were unable
to have more children they were anxious to adopt a child from the ferry
disaster. Parents had gone out for the day on the ferry and left their
children with friends or Grandparents and many were unable to care for
these now orphaned little ones. However there was no child available for
the Kings, but Jessie had been born and a home was being looked for, for
her. When my Grandfather George Campbell married Jessie King he would not
allow her birth certificate to declare that she was illigitimate and
subsequently had her certificate altered. This fact that our beloved
Mother and Grandmother was not the actual daughter of the Kings only
became known to my Mother Hannah Hall after Jessie had passed away.
Janet, Hannah's elder sister learnt of the fact earlier and told Hannah.
Naturally this fact made no difference to us, Jessie was much loved and
reveried by all the family.
