  "Eric and Gwyneth Lawton" Some time ago - I can not find the email - you posted a question about Robert Godlonton White [b.1853, probably in Grahamstown] He married Frances Amelia Stokes on 11 Apr 1876 and returned to England in 1882-1883 with his wife and two daughters. I have now satisfied myself that he was a son of Robert White [b.1819 in England; d.26 Oct 1894 in Brighton, England], Robert was a nephew of Robert Godlonton and came to Grahamstown in 1838 to join his uncle at the Grahamstown Gazette and became a partner in "Godlonton & White" in 1845.His parents were William White and Sarah, who married in 1807 in Hackney. Robert Godlonton White [plus wife and family] appear in the 1891 and 1901 Census as living in Bedford, England. There are surviving letters between Robert W and Robert Godlonton W in the Rhodes Libaray, Oxford.
