Notes |
- He and his wife migrated to Natal where he was first refused a grant of land as he would not swear allegiance to the Voortrekker Volksraad, but after the British took over he was granted the farm "Umkomanzi Drift" of 3,324 acres - this was in February 1855. From about July 1848 to October 1852 he owned a store in Pietermaritzburg and he made enough from this to finance his farming. He renamed the farm "Craiggie Burn" and there he did stock farming and sugar planting. He did quite well until lungsickness decimated his stock and the years of the depression in the 1860s impoverished him. By May 1882 the McKenzies were living at Onderbroek Spruit near Ladysmith. { Brian Tee}
