Notes |
- His insolvent estate 1904 shows that he was a 'lunatic' in the asylum in Pretoria. It is interesting that his sister Edaline Brook was also considered a 'mental patient'.
9 June 1904: Court declared William Arthur Brook to be "of unsound mind and incapable of managing his affairs".
He owned property in Muizenberg, Cape (valued at £140), life assurance policies (valued at £600), proprietary rights in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (valued at £200) and proprietary rights in the Johannesburg Turf Club (valued at £60).
First account of the administration of his estate, 18 April 1905
Payment of various amounts totalling £204 8s 10d, mostly for legal fees and the maintenance of Wm A Brook.
Second account of the administration of the estate, 31 January 1906
Gives a list of assets realised (totalling £306 1s 1d) and those still unrealised (£300), with details of payments made, mostly legal and related fees, including the appointment of a new curator.
Letter dated 31 August 1904 from Louis Silbermann, broker of Johannesburg, to the Colonial Trust Corporation, Graaff-Reinet:
"I had a visit from Mr W A Brook yesterday who informed me that he had escaped from the Asylum at Pretoria. On his arrival here he was in a most deplorable condition, having walked all the way, so that I felt it necessary to take him to an outfitters and have him supplied with a new suit and also a change of clothing and now enclose 3 accounts herewith shewing the amount of £8 2s 6d expended by me. I also lent Mr Brook 10/- in cash and shall be pleased to have your cheque for £8 12s 6d. Since writing, I may mention that one of the warders from the Asylum arrived, and Mr Brook has been escorted safely back to Pretoria."
MOOC 13/1/1570 Ref 223
Third account of the administration of the estate, 12 November 1907
Account of income (mostly dividends) and expenditure (totalling £58 8s 6d), leaving the estate £5 14s in credit.
