Notes |
- Robert was found guilty of the rape of Eliza Istead in 1831. He was sentenced to be hung but after his mother petitioned the Governor, the sentence was reduced to transportation to New South Wales. his mother petitioned the Governor once again and he was sent to Robben Island for 14 years.
The next record at the Cape Archives in 1882 shows a J W Kewley applying on his behalf for his admittance into the Old Somerset Hospital due to ill health. The letter states that he has a son and 2 daughters. The son states that he is caring for his sister and 2 orphans and so cannot care for his father.
