• Notes

  In his young days he went on a hunting expedition with Gordon Cumming along the Sabi River towards the Lebombo Mountains, where he shot lion and buffalo. Hilton lived at 'Hales Owen' near Cradock where he was well known as a breeder of stud horses. In the Frontier War of 1878 he was Captain of Barber's Horse, and his services were mentioned inthe memoirs of Sir Evelyn Wood, who was in command of the British Troops. Later in life Hilton compounded his two names into a surname, calling himself Hilton Hilton-Barber, and his decendants bear this name. buried together with Guy Barber 1839 - 1925 in Cradock .... a brother ?????
